Raleigh Sutton has completed the new book "Kane County, Illinois African American Civil War Vets": an educational and informative work that offers detailed descriptions and important historical records that describe the experiences of African American veterans in the Civil War.

Author Raleigh Sutton introduces the work, writing, "After the final version of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, it was also decided that African Americans be allowed to join the military. Since the beginning of the war, many Blacks had tried to enlist but were turned away. The reception of this edict had mixed reviews, many thinking that African Americans didn't have the intelligence or the will to be proper soldiers. This was especially true regarding the cavalry."

The introduction continues: "A close examination of some service records reveals that it was noted that the enlistee was 'free before January 1, 1863,' leaving the remainder to be escaped or liberated slaves who were organized into regiments in conquered territory. For the time, the soldiers were average height between five feet, three inches tall to five feet, eight inches tall, with a few as tall as six feet, and their ages ranged between sixteen years and forty years, in a time when forty years was considered 'middle age.' Except for White officers, separation was strictly enforced even when it came to hospitals."

Published by Newman Springs Publishing, Raleigh Sutton's compilation describes the experiences of several individuals by name.

Readers who wish to experience this impactful work can purchase "Kane County, Illinois African American Civil War Vets" at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iBooks Store, Amazon, or Barnes and Noble.
