U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm and the Republic of Korea (ROK) Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy Lee Chang-Yang met last week to discuss cooperation under the Ministerial U.S.-ROK Energy Policy Dialogue and committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation on clean energy, climate, and energy security.
The meeting promoted bilateral collaboration across the U.S.-ROK Energy Policy Dialogue’s three pillars – policies and planning; technologies and research; and commercialization and deployment – to support economy-wide decarbonization in the United States and the ROK.
Secretary Granholm and Minister Lee discussed ways that the United States and the ROK may cooperate to strengthen clean energy technology supply chains and collaborate on clean energy technology demonstrations and deployment. The two affirmed the need to promote clean energy partnerships through people-to-people exchanges, investments, and R&D cooperation between experts on areas of mutual agreement. This cooperation can also be expanded to include coordination in multilateral forums in which the United States and the ROK are active, such as the G20, APEC and the Clean Energy Ministerial/Mission Innovation. Additionally, Secretary Granholm and Minister Lee reaffirmed that both countries are committed to engaging in global civil nuclear cooperation consistent with the statement by President Biden and President Yoon.
The U.S. Department of Energy and the ROK Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy acknowledges the critically important role of private industry to spur innovation and technology deployment, promote joint demonstration projects, and expand clean energy jobs and looks forward to engaging with a range of private and public stakeholders to advance clean energy and decarbonization efforts.
